Stuwix Resources is Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) Standard Certified. This demonstrates a higher commitment of environmental Stewardship.
As a market logging company, Stuwix Resources strives to realize the greatest value possible from the fibre harvested. This is accomplished by fully utilizing all the fibre harvested during operations. Stuwix is an innovator in the Merritt Timber Supply Area by fully tapping into the pulp, post & rail, and grinding markets to ensure the fullest utilization practicable of every tree.
In maximizing the harvested tree to produce saw log for use in local mills, the remainder is processed & hauled for production of paper products, and post & rail plants for construction of the posts and rail fencing material. Material left such as branches, and small discarded pieces are ground down and shipped to be used in bioenergy facilities. In only the most remote sites does Stuwix need to burn slash piles to manage fire risk at post-harvest.
While as much of the tree harvested is utilized, Stuwix takes care to ensure material is left on the cut blocks to encourage nutrient recycling and water retention. In addition, course woody material left on the cut blocks provide valuable habitat for small mammals and invertebrates.
Stuwix has developed a Forest Stewardship plan for its operating area which protects measures dealing with:
Special requirements, potential problems or unforeseen conditions on a special site.
Control measures of soil disturbance, fish stream crossing, wetlands and culvert installations.
Aware of threatened and negative impacts on identified wildlife species that may be impacted by operations.
Participation in programs and demonstration of activities as appropriate to limit the introduction, impact, and spread of invasive exotic plants and animals that directly threaten or are alikely to threaten native plant and animal communities.
